personal and political

First, congratulations to [info]ozma914 on becoming a grandfather x2 (twins).

His post reminded me that I’d neglected to mention a rather important tidbit of news—on 06/13/08 my pervious employer Biff and his partner Jorge became the father’s of a little boy.

While part of me had hoped that Biff would completely lose it and name the infant something wildly inappropriate like Tardis however apparently sanity prevailed and the boy’s name is Julian.

Friday the 13th Baby: Young Julian contemplates existence.

It’s funny, but on an abstract and grandiose level I can’t help but equating Julian’s birth to two daddies with the recent legalization of gay marriage in California, almost as if the two events show—one on a personal and one on a public level-- the legitimacy of love and family that goes beyond the traditional definition.

I have to admit it’s been a long time since I’ve felt optimistic and hopeful about the capacity of the American people to accept and include.  The past decade or so seems to have been a downward slide into intolerance and polarization.  I think the approaching end of the Bush presidency and the possibility that Barack Obama could replace him has done a lot to brighten my outlook.

I don’t talk about politics a lot (because if you haven’t noticed I’m kind of self obsessed) but I am behind Obama in the current campaign.  He’s from Chicago, which makes it really exciting that he might be president but it’s more than that.  I actually believe in him.  I believe he’s real and decent and has the nation’s best interest at heart as opposed to his own (something I’ve never believed about Hillary Clinton).

While I’ve always had a great deal of respect for John McCain as a veteran, a former P.O.W. and as someone who has always bucked the system and gone against the party line he’s really disappointed me in this campaign by allying himself with religious extremists such John Hagee (known for the notorious statement that Hurricane Katrina occurred because God was displeased with an upcoming Pride Parade), taking an anti-diplomatic stance in international affairs, and for his support of using continued military action to deal with the situation in Iraq.  It just seems to me that someone like McCain should know how destructive and fruitless war can be.  About a year ago I had hopes that he would be at the forefront of finding a better way but apparently that isn’t going to be happening.

congratulations to the dads!! look at his FACE! i think the socially correct thing to say is "what a cute baby" but that picture gave me serious GLEE and deserves a "WAAAHAHA!" oh that's a great one. ^_^ embarrassing baby pictures for the win~ they've got blackmail material through his teens, hurra!

i'm in baby-glee at work, too, my big-boss and her partner are expecting. two moms, and when they came to our BBQ last week Jen was *really* showing. they've got about 6 months to go.

personally, i'm not ever going to walk the baby trail. vicariously, though, it's a miracle show and a passion play all rolled up into one. freakin' awesome.

congrats to your boss and his!

Biff had a whole on-line album of baby pictures posted, many of which showed Julian looking very angelic but this was my favorite, it showed so much personality.

I'm not the maternal type myself either. Babies are cute and exciting because they have so many possibilities but (and this is probably a horrible thing to say) I don't want to be the one responsible for fucking up another human being.

Well, congratulations to the fathers, he's really cute !!

And I just wanted to add that I'm also very pleased with the legalization of gay marriage in California ! I'd really like it to happen in France, though I know it will not be under this president's time (doesn't want "that image" for his country.......). And, though I'm not american and have never been in the United States, I too feel very hopeful about the future... I don't trust politicians easily, but I really hope Obama will be elected, and I believe that yes, things can change.

But enough about politics, and here again, congrats to your boss ^_^

France definately should legalize gay marriage quick-- they don't want to lose their reputation as being much infinately more progressive and sophisticated in sexual matters than we puritanical Americans.

Politically, Barack Obama is the first thing I've felt good about in I don't know how long. The last 8 years have been brought America to a very bad place, the economy sucks, we're bogged down in Iraq with the possibilities of war with North Korea or Iran looming, and the government can't be trusted to handle things competently. Overall there's a lot of paranoia and pessimism. It feels like I'm not an optimistic person or a true beleiver but Obama really seems like the only person who might actually be able to turn things around.

Welcome to the world, little fellow! Sorry about the mess, but the planet you have coalesced on is infested with humans.

Your Dads will no doubt explain about them. This is really a pretty nice place despite what we've done to it. But I have to say that it looks to me as if you have landed somewhere that you are loved and wanted.

There are worse starts. Trust me.

I do feel sometimes like children that are just being born are being handed both a gigantic mess and a glittering, unreal, unsustainable carnival that they'll be allowed to play in until everything comes crashing down. Still, I think Julian is off to a good start. Family is very important to both his father's so he'll be one of the few kids of his generation to grow up supported by a close knit, extended family system with lots of grandparents, great-grandparents aunts, uncles, cousins in close contact and proximity.
